Pharmacist (Per Diem)

Job Responsibilities:

Department: Pharmacy
Status:  Per Diem (Variable Hours/Pay)
Shift: 1st & 2nd
Hours: 1st - 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Pay Frequency: Bi-Weekly

Job Summary:  The Pharmacist must be clinically orientated with a BS in Pharmacy at a minimum and a valid NYS Pharmacy license and current registration. The pharmacist must be able to interpret lab values and interact well with other health care professionals in monitoring the patient’s drug therapy.  Good communication skills and basic computer abilities are required.      

Responsibilities:        

  • Works within the limitations and requirements of State and Federal laws as well as SJMH policies and procedures.
  • Able to enter and verify medication orders using the appropriate formats and deals with any interaction or information flags that may occur.
  • Is knowledgeable regarding the available reference sources and selects the most appropriate for any given question.
  • Is able to effectively communicate with nursing and physician staff, especially regarding clinical interventions.
  • Is able to document clinical interventions, and progress notes using the SJMH computer system.
  • Understands Pyxis functions, and is able to do simple maintenance functions such a drawer recovery.
  • Maintains narcotic inventory and reports any discrepancy to the Director. This includes being able to generate the necessary computer or Pyxis reports to solve discrepancies in the pharmacy or nursing units.
  • Understands basic compounding functions and the use of equipment such as a “glove box” to do aseptic manipulation of sterile products.
  • Understands the drug acquisition and inventory process to include PO’s, issue and transfer functions.
  • Can oversee the technician staff and has a working knowledge of their functions and duties.
  • Is able to oversee the operation of the pharmacy in the supervisor’s absence.
  • Understands the various “code” situations and is able to function while they are happening.

Job Qualifications:

Job Specifications: 

  • BS degree Pharmacy and a current license and registration are required.
  • Must meet the NYS continuing education requirement.
  • Hospital pharmacy experience and supervisory experience are desired.
  • Must be able to comply with the SJMH on call requirements.

Other Job Information (if applicable):
Physical Demands:  Approximate 50/50 split between sitting for computer work and standing. Able to
lift at least 20 pounds.
Mental Demands:  Must be able to think clearly in stressful and emergency situations. Must be able to field a variety of questions from both from the medical community and the public. 
Interactions:   Mostly with physicians and nursing, but also the ancillary departments as well. The greatest degree of interaction will be with other pharmacy department staff.
Work Conditions:   Most activity takes place in the pharmacy department.  Other areas of the hospital
may be visited as well as any off campus sites where drugs are utilized.
Hazards:  Potential exposures to NIOSH listed hazardous drugs in healthcare settings.
