Lab Technologist

Job Responsibilities:

The Lab Technologist performs and interprets testing for use in the treatment and diagnosis of disease. May be directly involved in the collection of some specimens. Use of established procedures and analyze submitted specimens using chemical, macroscopic and microscopic means, including analyzer and manual methods as defined. Additional responsibilities would include assuring the Laboratory's compliance of regulatory agency standards. 

Demonstrates Proficiency:

  • Maintains professional competencies , education and licensure
  • Performs equipment maintenance, calibration and quality control procedures necessary, including troubleshooting. Expectations in troubleshooting include daily surveillance, remedial actions and documentation, as well as supervisor notification if required
  • Functions in the ordering, collecting and receiving of specimens for testing, evaluating all elements for acceptability and accuracy
  • Performs testing on blood, urine, stool and body fluid specimens with accuracy, to include proficiency testing in each area of skill
  • Performs compatibility testing for transfusion services, manage inventory of blood products to include ordering, documentation and disposition
  • Cultivate, isolate and identify pathogenic bacteria and other organisms
  • Assists with audits, inventory and other tasks as assigned

  • Participates in department and/or system wide team dynamic initiatives
  • Provides day-to-day support of workflow within the work unit; including disseminating information, assigning staff to cover for absences, providing technical assistance, answering questions and resolving problems as directed by the Lab Supervisor and/or Lab Manager
  • Acts as a team player and works collaboratively within the team and organization
  • Assists with developing priorities, goals, and action plans
  • Responds to requests from Lab Supervisor and/or Lab Manager
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to assist with evaluation of programs and services

  • Identifies better, faster, more efficient ways of doing tasks as well as eliminates unnecessary work and all non-value-added activities to enable a focus on work that generates greater value
  • Responds to requests from Lab Supervisor and/or Lab Manager, and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to assist with evaluation of programs and services. Communicates with Supervisor regarding cost savings initiatives and planning
  • Utilizes understanding of regulatory requirements to identify ways to improve process quality and compliance





Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology a plus
  • NYS Limited Permit or NYS Licensure required
  • Strong verbal, organizational and inter personal skills are required
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to multitask
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Proficiency in computer software and databases required


Language Ability:
Ability to read, write and interpret documents in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific/trade/technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers or regulatory agencies. Ability to speak clearly to patients and staff as well as physicians.

Math Ability:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and make responsible decisions.

Physical Demands:
Must be able to remain in a standing position 50% of the time, move about within the work area, access file cabinets, copier and fax machines, walk to transport specimens, communicate, converse and exchange information and move, transport or position a minimum weight of 50 lbs.

Working Conditions:
Potential exposure to chemicals and communicable diseases and related waste.
