Job Responsibilities:

Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Director of Finance, this position is responsible for a range of reimbursement activities related to hospital, physician and ancillary reimbursement including methodologies, operations, advice, consultation and support to staff.  This position also conducts various types of analyses including cost-benefit analyses and financial analyses documenting analytical findings and conducting internal and external research.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Prepare the monthly bad debt calculation, unbilled/billed contractual allowance reserve calculation, and the revenue model
  • Prepare monthly journal entries accounts receivable, contractual allowance, and bad debt allowance, in addition to reconciling the balances to the hospitals general ledger
  • Assist in the review all third party payer rate sheets and calculate the affect of any changes on the hospitals revenue. 
  • Prepare an estimated year-end schedule of third party balances and update the report on a monthly basis.
  • Perform monthly verification, reconciliation, and preparation of journal entries for the third party settlement accounts
  • Prepare and submit monthly the nursing home and hospital cash assessment reports
  • Prepare the monthly Medicaid shortfall and Medicare shortfall calculations for community benefit reporting
  • Prepare monthly revenue reports to validate the accurate recording of monthly and year-to-date net patient service revenue
  • Prepare the monthly net patient revenue vs. patient cash receipts report.
  • Assist in the investigation of revenue budget variances, cost trends and utilization patterns
  • Prepare the behavioral health “expense to revenue ratio” quarterly and post it on the CHE portal
  • Collect, organize and prepare statistical and financial reports and analyses as needed by management
  • Determine operational impact of analytical findings
  • Provide financial analysis on special projects
  • Assist in the preparation of the hospitals annual revenue budget including the monthly allocation of budgeted revenues, contractual allowances and bad debt expense
  • Assist management in the monthly allocation of the hospitals budgeted volumes
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual New York State Capital Expense Budget Report
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of the hospitals annual institutional cost reports and other 3rd party payer reports
  • Assist in the preparation of New York State Mental Health Supplement to the Institutional Cost Report for the hospital
  • Assist in the preparation of the NYS RHCF supplement to the Institutional Cost Report for the hospital
  • Take the lead on preparing the year-end audit reports required by the hospitals external auditors for Accounts Receivable, Allowance for Doubtful Accounts, Unbilled/Billed Contractual Allowances, Third Party Settlements, and Revenue and other audit schedule assigned by the Supervisor of Decision Support/Reimbursement.
  • Understand and analyze the flow of data and information
  • Supports the development of ad hoc reporting capabilities to meet the information requirements of management
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
  • Be accountable for accurate and timely work
  • Responsible for understanding and adherence to the Code of Conduct, and the Corporate Compliance Plan (CCP) at St. James Mercy Health.
  • Participates in all educational requirements related to Corporate Compliance as required by the CCP Education Plan.

 


Job Qualifications:

Job Specifications:

  • BA/BS decree with Masters preferred.
  • 1-2  years of experience in the health care industry
  • Experience in a health care environment preferred.
  • Prior work experience in hospital finance or reimbursement department and familiarity with cost reports
  • Extensive experience with spreadsheet and database software
  • Superior analytic skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to think and act independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Team player committed to quality processes and outcomes.

 

Physical Demands:  Position requires extensive sitting at a computer terminal. Frequent bending over for filing and occasional lifting of heavy boxes.

 

Mental Demands:    Needs to be independent thinker.  Stress level is usually low, but on occasions could be high.

 

Interactions:       Departmental personnel, hospital employees and external customers

 

Work Conditions:    Well lit office with normal noise associated with office printer.

 

Hazards:            Long-term visual and physical exposure from working with personal computer.
