Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Job Summary: The National Gallery of Art (NGA) is seeking a skilled Linux Administrator for a 90-day, full-time surge support role focused on the transition and modernization of legacy Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) environments. The candidate will work directly alongside NGA’s current Linux Admin, supporting system upgrades, troubleshooting, and environment hardening during the transition from RHEL 7 to a current version. Candidate will be required to work onsite at the National Gallery, primarily Thursdays and Fridays aligning their schedule with the current Linux administrator.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Shadow and support NGA’s lead Linux Admin on all active RHEL modernization efforts
  • Assist in the migration of RHEL 7 systems to newer supported versions
  • Document system configurations, upgrade procedures, and architecture changes
  • Help assess and remediate legacy dependencies blocking RHEL upgrades
  • Provide patching, scripting, and system performance tuning as needed
  • Collaborate with internal IT stakeholders for seamless operational continuity
  • Assist with planning for post-upgrade hardening and compliance
  • Potential ad hoc support on non-Linux systems, if required
Required Qualifications:

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Expert-level knowledge of RHEL 7, 8, or 9 system administration
  • Experience performing major OS upgrades and platform migrations
  • Proficient in Bash scripting and troubleshooting in CLI
  • Familiarity with systemd, SELinux, kickstart, and RHEL repos
  • Understanding of configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Satellite) is preferred
  • Must be comfortable working onsite, with primary support needed Thursdays and Fridays
  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Must be self-directed and adaptable to fast-paced environments
