Summary/Position Overview:

Powerline Technician I (PLT I) at Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) is a senior-level tradesperson responsible for advanced line maintenance and construction tasks, as well as mentoring Trainees and PLT II employees. This role requires demonstrated leadership, in-depth technical expertise, and an unwavering commitment to safety and team collaboration. The PLT I also plays a critical role in supporting the success and continuity of GBPC’s Trainee and PLT Progression Plan.


Duties and Tasks:

Maintain health, safety and environment standards by:

  • Ensuring compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Inspecting safety equipment regularly.
  • Ensuring safe clearance of all lines and equipment.
  • Performing hazardous waste spill control and cleanup.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Safely execute advanced live-line and de-energized work on distribution and sub-transmission systems.
  • Perform underground distribution work and switchgear operations when competent to do so.
  • Conduct switching operations on lines and equipment as per safety and operational protocols.
  • Utilize technical drawings (maps, blueprints, specifications, sketches) to complete assigned tasks accurately.
  • Assist with maintaining maintenance logs, manuals, records, and operational/safety documentation.
  • Diagnose and support troubleshooting of electrical circuit or equipment failures.
  • Provide timely written reports on system conditions and any irregularities observed.
  • Utilizes advanced systems such as GIS, OMS, AMI, CMMS, EAM and digital field applications to support work.
  • Participate in substation maintenance tasks and emergency restoration efforts during abnormal conditions.
  • Consistently apply GBPC’s Safe Work Practices (SWP) and job hazard assessments.
  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with established electrical codes, utility best practices, and approved GBPC standards and procedures.

  • Provide safe, prompt, and courteous service aligned with industry best practices.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and respect in all customer and community interactions.
  • Incorporate safe behaviours into every task, fully complying with GBPC’s environmental and safety procedures.
  • Complete paperwork and job documentation clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner.

Leadership and Mentorship:

  • Serve as a lead mentor to Trainee PLTs and PLT II employees.
  • Guide CBT signoffs through hands-on instruction, performance observation, and constructive feedback.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of completed CBTs, mentoring logs, and progression checklists
  • Participate in boot camps, line school events, and the annual Skills Expo.
  • Support Powerline Lead and Supervisor in conducting MAPP and PDP discussions for developing staff.


Academic/Skill/Experience Requirements:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in powerline construction and maintenance.
  • Full completion of the PLT II progression including all CBT modules and performance reviews.
  • Proven leadership ability and endorsement by Supervisors/Working Foremen as capable of leading crews and mentoring others.
  • Underground competency preferred, with involvement in UG training considered an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions, often at heights or in confined spaces.
  • Physical tasks such as climbing poles, lifting heavy materials, and long periods of standing or walking.
  • Required to be part of the on-call rotation and available for emergency response during nights, weekends, and holidays.
