Summary/Position Overview:

The Lead Line Technician oversees and coordinates the activities of a team of powerline technicians engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical power lines and associated equipment. This role ensures that projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulations and company standards. The Lead Line Technician supervises crews that may include Powerline Technicians I, II and Trainees, providing technical guidance, leadership, and operational oversight.


Duties and Tasks:

Maintain health, safety and environment standards by:

  • Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and health standards.
  • Conduct and enforce safety procedures, job site risk assessments, and proper PPE use.
  • Ensure operations and maintenance adhere to updated safety policies.
  • Lead incident investigations and report safety concerns.
  • Ensure completion of required HSE training and safety initiatives.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership and Crew Coordination:

  • Serves as the on-site lead for assigned line crews, coordinating work assignments, materials, tools, and safety briefings.
  • Ensures daily work is completed in compliance with job plans, safety procedures, and operational priorities.
  • Acts as the first point of contact for resolving field issues, escalating complex matters to the Supervisor as needed.
  • Monitors crew performance, productivity, and adherence to safety and environmental standards.

Technical Expertise and Organization:

  • Performs and supervises high-risk tasks including live-line, hot-stick, and de-energized work.
  • Leads switching operations and ensures proper tagging, communication, and system restoration procedures.
  • Supports system troubleshooting and restoration, including after-hours emergencies and storm response.
  • Verifies completion of field documentation including switching orders, job safety Plans (JSPs), and outage reports.
  • Utilizes advanced systems such as GIS, OMS, AMI, CMMS, and digital field applications to support work.
  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with established electrical codes, utility best practices, and approved GBPC standards and procedures.
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing and performing other related duties as assigned.

Training and Mentorship:

  • Mentors Powerline Technicians at all levels, providing coaching on technical skills, safety practices, and work methods.
  • Supports Trainee development by conducting hands-on training, facilitating CBT signoffs, and assessing skill progression.
  • Provides feedback to Supervisors on employee performance, development needs, and training opportunities.
  • Assists with delivering boot camps, skills expos, and in-field evaluations as part of the PLT Progression Program.

Customer Service and Community Engagement:

  • Upholds customer service excellence by ensuring timely, safe, and courteous service delivery.
  • Represents GBPC in the field by maintaining a professional image and resolving customer concerns when encountered.
  • Communicates effectively with dispatch, engineering, and other departments to coordinate service and restoration.

Academic/Skill/Experience Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Advanced knowledge of electrical distribution and transmission systems, equipment, and maintenance practices.
  • Proven leadership ability with experience in coordinating and mentoring diverse crews.
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations, live-line procedures, and emergency response protocols.
  • Proficiency in the use of work planning tools, GIS, CMMS, and outage response platforms.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to foster teamwork and lead by example under stressful conditions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Successful completion of the GBPC Powerline Technician I role with strong performance evaluations.
  • Minimum of 10 -15 years of experience in electrical line work, with at least 2 years in a senior or mentoring role.
  • Valid Driver’s License (Class C or higher) and clean driving record.
  • Certified in CPR, Pole Top Rescue, and Live-Line Work.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring ability within a utility or field operations setting.
  • Completion of all required CBTs and progression milestones under the PLT Program.
