Summary/Position Overview:
The Director of Energy is responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of energy generating assets. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of energy generating assets while driving performance improvements and compliance with all industrial, safety and environmental standards.
POSITION SCOPE:
This position oversees a team of managers, engineers, supervisors, operators, and technicians, fostering a culture of safety, excellence, reliability, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
Duties and Tasks:
Maintain health, safety, and environment standards by:
- Promoting a strong safety culture within the energy team, ensuring adherence to all safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant regulatory, environmental, and safety standards and requirements.
- Supporting the leading or delegating team members to support incident investigations and root cause analysis, implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Providing leadership support by:
- Providing engineering, technical, and managerial support to direct reports as needed
- Conduct performance reviews, set objectives, and provide regular feedback and coaching to team members.
- Auditing energy maintenance, operations, and standard operating procedures, and policies to assure that proper technical aspects are maintained.
- Develop a comprehensive operation and maintenance strategy and provide strategic guidance to enhance the overall near and long-term operational efficiency, reliability and availability of energy generating assets.
- Collaborating with other team members or departments such as engineering, to optimize overall plant performance and reliability and to ensure efficient operations.
- Ensure operational and capital expenditure are managed within budget to drive operational excellence and preserve the integrity of existing and future assets.
Provide operational oversight by:
- Providing strategic direction and leadership for all aspects of plant operations to ensure safe, efficient, reliable power generation.
- Providing oversight for the developing, updating and implementation of operational policies, procedures, and best practices to optimize plant performance.
- Monitoring and analyzing plant performance metrics, ensuring targets for availability, reliability, and efficiency are met or exceeded.
- Ensuring the efficient, accurate completion of operational reports, logs, shift reports etc.
Provide maintenance and asset management by:
- Overseeing the maintenance strategy and programs to ensure equipment reliability and longevity.
- Implementing corrective, predictive, and preventive maintenance programs, utilizing best practices OEM and industry standards.
- Ensuring timely and effective response to unplanned maintenance and plant outages.
- Ensuring timely execution of planned maintenance outages.
- Maintaining accurate records of maintenance inspections, repairs and activities, and equipment history
- Providing support for diagnosing and troubleshooting diesel engine issues to identify the root cause of problems.
- Ensuring the completion of regular maintenance and servicing tasks on diesel engines to ensure optimal performance and longevity and documenting such activities.
- Supporting the identification and repairing or replacing faulty engine parts and components as needed
- Ensuring the implementation and management of an integrated asset management system covering both asset integrity and maintenance aspects.
Drive continuous improvement by:
- Improving on Generation and Operational availability, reliability and efficiency deliverables, and
key performance indicators
- Overseeing routine and specialized inspections of assets to identify potential issues and assess
overall asset health.
Staying up to date with the latest advancements in diesel engine technology and maintenance
techniques.
- Identifying opportunities for process improvements, cost optimization, and efficiency
enhancement within the energy departments.
- Identify and assess risks associated with operations, diesel engine assets and maintenance practices.
- Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies to ensure safe and reliable operation
- Ensure an accurate inventory of assets, including condition, maintenance history, and criticality
are maintained.
- Conduct assessment of performance monitoring and implement monitoring systems to identify
condition, health, and performance of assets.
- Analyze data to identify trends, predict failures and optimize maintenance interventions.
- Implement condition monitoring systems to track real-time performance and health of diesel
engines.
- Evaluating new technologies and adapts to existing services and procedures making recommendations to management.
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, industrial customers, and the community.
- Represent the plant in corporate meetings, industry forums, and community engagements.
- Communicate effectively with senior management, providing regular updates on plant performance and initiatives.
Academic/Skill/Experience Requirements:
The preferred candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in engineering, or related field, along with 10 years (10) years’ experience in an industrial environment and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a senior leadership position. Proven experience in asset integrity management and maintenance leadership or industrial sector.
They must possess interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, strong leadership skills with demonstrated competencies in conflict resolution, decision making, delegating, supporting, motivating and challenging employees toward improved performance. They should be able to interpret information, develop and implement solutions, and identify creative approaches to problem solving; and strong organizational skills with experience managing resources for complex projects with competing deadlines. They must demonstrate honesty and ethical behavior in all interactions, ensuring that actions and words are consistent, and following through on commitments.
