Summary/Position Overview:
The Engineer II (Electrical) is responsible for providing technical expertise and engineering support to various departments,. Including Grid Solutions, Customer Operations, Energy, and HSE.. They role serves as a Project Lead, Design Lead or technical contributor on projects of varying size and
complexity, supporting strategic planning, project execution and operational improvements. They will also assist in the maintenance and development of renewable energy infrastructure and related initiatives.

Duties and Tasks:

Maintain health, safety and environmental standards by:   

  • Develop standard operating procedures for safety and environment policies.
  • Establish maintenance and ensure compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all environmental and health standards, and
  • Complete all required HSE training.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Contribute to GBPC’s strategy and goals by:

  • Collaborate with other leaders to align engineering efforts with our corporate and departmental objective and strategies - ensuring that all people, planned work and capital projects are aligned to realize stated objectives.
  • Assist with developing road maps and capital improvement plans to modernize grid systems in alignment with industry best practice.
  • Conduct diagnostics and performance assessments of GBPC’s technical infrastructure, including the Substations and transmission and distribution system, to understand challenges and opportunities for improvement, system failures and their consequences, to determine criticalities, and to establish projections for maintenance requirements and to identify the lifetime of component parts, and
  • Contribute to long-term strategic planning for Grid Operations with clearly identified proximate objectives and regularly monitoring progress toward those objectives, identifying challenges and recommending solutions.

Achieve performance results by:

  • Follow the established trend of developing and implementing innovative engineering solutions that support long term renewable business strategies and operational objectives
  • Assist project teams with developing design standards, construction specifications and operations requirements to ensure efficient operation of Substations, transmission, and distribution facilities to achieve performance goals,
  • Collaborate across disciplines to develop electrical design documents and drawings for projects, including one-lines, three-lines, control schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay panel arrangements and specifications,
  • Perform overload, short circuit and relay coordination studies under the guidance of senior engineers and provide protection correlation on devices such as relays, circuit breakers, fuses, and grounding devices,
  • Assist in configuring and maintaining protection and control of other system monitoring devices,
  • Support the Renewable Energy Rider (RER) program by reviewing and approving related drawings
  • Monitor and record grid injections from renewable energy utilizing grid code motoring devices for compliance verification,
  • Create, document and define detailed engineering plans, processes, and procedures for the Grid Operations,
  • Work along with Grid Solutions team to continue designing and implementing engineering systems and platforms for power transformers, medium and low voltage circuit breakers, capacitor banks and power plant controllers,
  • Utilize tools like AMI, GIS, SCADA and the DCS, to evaluate system performance to identify losses or irregularities
  • Provide technical support for AMI, DERMS, GIS, Grid Code (Power Side), Outage Map, SCADA and other grid management tools,
  • Program intelligent electronic devices and platforms as required under supervision
  • Assist the team with developing, scheduling and executing capital projects on substation equipment for power and instrument transformers, reclosers, circuit breakers, motor operated devices, voltage regulators, etc.,
  • Take opportunities to improve system performance by monitoring and maintaining power quality metrics including trend, pattern, reporting analysis,
  • Assist with the preparation of generating outage tracker reports for current and historical outage information,
  • Assist with providing solutions to identify irregularities in power usage and supply configuration
  • Assist Customer Operations and Energy as needed to investigate suspect outages and determine when a field visit is necessary,
  • Create reports and monitor power quality and system performance, and investigating any anomalies, and 
  • Occasionally provide technical knowledge for supporting or leading root cause analysis, system improvement, enhance grid stability and contribute with modifying Asset Management.
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends and emerging technologies through workshops, professional development and publications.
  • Contribute to team effort by completing other duties as assigned.


Academic/Skill/Experience Requirements:
The Engineer II will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related  field with at least two years’ experience in an industrial or utility environment. He/she shall possess a strong understanding of power systems (generation, transmission and distribution), including
renewable energy and smart grid technologies. He/she will demonstrate analytical, communication and time management skills, with the ability to work both independently and in cross-functional teams.
