Summary/Position Overview:

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Grid Engineering or designee, the Temporary Electrician Technician Support is responsible for the installation, maintenance and support of plant electrical and control systems (with specific focus on GBPC’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) site), as well as other auxiliary equipment necessary for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of said systems. Other duties of the position include but are not limited to inspection, testing and evaluation of equipment integrity and performance, troubleshooting, logging of key aging parameters, system/material trending, operation of switchgear and other isolation equipment, repair and/or replacement of electronic, electrical, instrument and control equipment/components, battery charging, interpretation and preparation of schematic drawings, sketches, report production to reflect changes or alterations made to systems and equipment, oversight and day to day addressing of issues as they arise at the BESS site.

They will also be expected to provide technical support for other plant/facility equipment and processes, as needed.


Duties and Tasks:

Maintain health, safety and environment standards by:  

  • Establishing maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with all environmental and health standards, and
  • Completing all required HSE training.
  • Ensuring notification of site access with the LMO and Control Authority.
  • Compliance with GBPC’s LOTO procedures, and working in accordance with best practice.

Provide administrative leadership by:

  • Ensuring employees and contractors comply with work performance standards and company rules and regulations.
  • Coordinating and executing the planning of outages, shutdowns and daily activities.
  • Proactively providing recommendations to improve company’s assets.
  • Ensuring that maintenance and safety procedures are adhered to, and proper history and record keeping of equipment maintenance.
  • Ensuring that management of change (MOC) process takes place for all field changes and that plant equipment drawings are kept current.
  • Planning work to optimize efficient use of human and other resources.
  • Developing and maintaining, Standard Operating Procedures where necessary.
  • Ensuring accurate logging and reporting of paid hours for employees and where necessary, contractors.
  • Participating in root cause analysis investigations.
  • Completing safety area inspections as directed.

Provide Technical leadership by:

  • Maintaining electrical equipment list and instrument list (serial no, etc.)
  • Investigating and preparing reports regarding findings and causes of electrical/ instrumentation/ control equipment or system failures.
  • Troubleshooting and repairing of electrical/instrumentation/control equipment and systems; and rectification of issues.
  • Assisting with review of drawings.
  • Ensuring electrical installations are done to the required code and wiring schematics.
  • Ensuring calibration of all critical and non-critical equipment to prescribed program.
  • Installing of equipment/components based on drawings/schematics.
  • Preparing datasheets and specifications as needed.
  • Reviewing drawings and technical specifications.
  • Assisting with maintenance of drawings and documentation related to field wiring changes.
  • Assisting with improvements, upgrades, and innovations to company’s systems.
  • Configuring, programming, troubleshooting and repairing PLC, RTU, and similar control/network infrastructure.
  • Understanding preventative maintenance and ensuring work is done in a timely manner to protect the company’s various assets.
  • Developing test plans as required, following test plans, recording of results, and trending.
  • Maintaining equipment to optimize efficiency and availability.
  • Planning and assisting in training of maintenance staff.
  • Performing all other duties as assigned.
  • Leading testing of switchgear, auxiliary batteries, transformers, circuit breakers, battery modules, and PCS equipment.
  • Assisting with alarm management, alarm rationalization, and defining key system parameters.
  • Utilizing smart platforms as required (DCS, PI, etc.) to assist in the execution of duties.
  • Exhibiting a competent understanding of, and compliance with the LOTO procedures.

Provide Financial Support by:

  • Submitting items for budgetary consideration
  • Facilitating requisitions as necessary
  • Trending mean-time before failure (MTBF) of key components to inform the warehouse as it relates to critical spare parts and max/min levels.
  • Testing and evaluating equipment and making recommendations for performance optimization.
  • Providing baselines for operational parameters to ensure that equipment is performing satisfactorily within the approved tolerance.\
  • Assisting in root cause failure analysis and incident investigations.

Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies. Contribute to team effort by completing other duties as assigned.


Academic/Skill/Experience Requirements:

The Electrician Technician Support (Temporary) will have post-high school training in Science, Engineering, or related field. They will have 5 years’ experience at a technician level in the maintenance department of an industrial facility. They will have DCS and Programmable Logic Control (PLC) programming experience. They will have experience in specifying and/or maintaining field devices and networks. They will have knowledge of applicable codes and standards as it pertains to electrical safety and energy storage systems. They will be able to read electrical drawings and control schematics. They will have experience handling batteries, and a general understanding of DC systems and inverters, switchgear, transformers, DCS, and auxiliary electrical equipment. 

The Electrician Technician Support (Temporary) will be self-directed, meticulous, have good organization skills, and exhibit good judgment.  They should have the ability to troubleshoot and cope with the pressure and responsibility of project targets and deadlines and make decisions that align with established company policies. Additionally, they will be dependable, effective in communication – both orally and in writing and willing to work flexible hours, weekends, holidays and night work and be available for storm response.  This job requires the ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
