Summary/Position Overview:

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Grid Engineering or designee, the Engineer II (Mechanical) is responsible for the coordination and successful execution of mechanical projects and plant/facility support to ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation of equipment and auxiliary systems. They will oversee mechanical construction projects and provide design support on multi-disciplinary projects and tasks in accordance with Grid Engineering’s processes.  They will also be expected to provide technical support for plant/facility equipment and processes, including testing and evaluation of equipment performance, troubleshooting and engineering design/recommendations.


Duties and Tasks:

Maintain health, safety and environment standards by:  

  • Establishing maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with all environmental and health standards, and
  • Completing all required HSE training.

Advance GBPC’s strategies, goals and objectives by:

  • Assisting with developing road maps for enabling capital upgrades to the Energy Plant to enhance performance, improve operations, and modernize the mechanical processes in alignment with industry best practice.
  • Developing design standards, construction specifications, and maintenance and operations requirements to ensure efficient operation of the Energy facility to achieve performance goals.
  •  Leading projects and tasks as required by carrying out the role as Contract Administrator for GBPC’s Contractor Safety Management Process (CSMP) in accordance with Grid Engineering’s processes.This includes managing all aspects of project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring & control, and closing (This includes but is not limited to: facilitating procurement functions (such as preparation of Scope/RFP for materials, equipment, services and labour), site investigations, as-built verifications and modifications, preparation of bid evaluations and recommendations, preparation and management of schedules, preparing of cost estimates and EAs, invoice verification, financial tracking and forecasting, allocation of resources, risk management, safety management and compliance, construction management, quality control, and preparation of reports.)
  • Preparing preventative maintenance schedules where current gaps may exist, and for new construction assets to be included in project handover package in accordance with industry standards, and training of maintenance and operations personnel in the maintenance and operation of new equipment.
  • Testing and evaluating equipment and making recommendations for performance optimization.
  • Providing baselines for operational parameters to ensure that equipment is performing satisfactorily within the approved tolerance.
  • Assisting in root cause failure analysis and incident investigations.
  • Ability to review and understand AutoCAD based mechanical, electrical, piping and instrumentation diagrams, physical layouts and other drawings used in design and construction.
  • Ability to search, interpret and apply standards to the design and installation process, and maintenance recommendations.
  • Identifying critical parts and developing modifications to extend equipment life and reduce costs.
  • Assisting with development, revisions and implementation of procedures and audit systems, as necessary to ensure procedures are reviewed and updated at regular intervals.
  • Preparing monthly reports as necessary.
  • Supporting Management of Change (MoCs) through vetting MoCs that are submitted for mechanical alterations.
  • Ensuring compliance with Engineering’s Design for Safety SOP and with the Management of Change process when leading projects/tasks.
  • Compliance with, and participation in GBPC’s Engineering Progression Plan.

Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies. Contribute to team effort by completing other duties as assigned. Processes are subject to change from time to time to ensure alignment with the functional requirements of the business, in addition to supporting Grid Engineering’s commitment to continuous improvement and process optimization.


Academic/Skill/Experience Requirements:

The Engineer II (Mechanical) will have an earned bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical/Marine Engineering with at least three (3) years’ experience in the related field. They will be proficient in Microsoft Suite (Office, Word, Project, PowerPoint, and Excel), and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).  The Engineer II (Mechanical) will be self-directed, meticulous, have good organization skills, and exhibit good judgment.  They should have the ability to troubleshoot and cope with the pressure and responsibility of project targets and deadlines. Additionally, they will be dependable, effective in communication – both orally and in writing and willing to work flexible hours, weekends, holidays and night work and be available for storm response.
