Summary/Position Overview:

The Engineering Manager is responsible for managing the Engineering Department within the Energy Business Unit.  They will provide leadership and engineering support to the operations and maintenance teams and oversee the team responsible for the execution of capital and other related engineering projects at Grand Bahama Power Company.  This position plays a key role in the overall success of the organization by planning, managing, and monitoring engineering functions. You will be responsible for overseeing various engineering projects, processes, budgets, timelines and making necessary adjustments in order to ensure successful completion. This position requires a high degree of people and time management along with the coordination of cross-functional teams.  


Duties and Tasks:

The Engineering Manager will:

 

Provide leadership to maintain health, safety and environmental standards by:        

  • Establishing maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with all environmental and health standards, and
  • Completing all required HSE training.
  • Developing standard operating procedures for safety and environment policies

 Contribute to GBPC’s strategy and goals by:

  • Articulating, along with other leaders, a clear technical strategy for Energy Engineering that aligns with our corporate strategy - ensuring that all people, planned work and capital projects are aligned to realize stated objectives.
  • Developing road maps for enabling capital upgrades to equipment at the Energy Center to enhance plant performance, improve operations, and modernize the GBPC electric grid in alignment with industry best practice.
  • Engaging diagnostic processes for the continuous assessment of GBPC’s technical infrastructure to understand challenges and opportunities for improvement, system failures and their consequences, to determine criticalities, and to establish projections for maintenance requirements and to identify the lifetime of component parts, and
  • Establishing, along with other leaders, a strategic plan for Energy Engineering with clearly identified near term objectives and regularly monitoring progress toward those objectives, identifying challenges and recommending solutions.

Provide technical leadership by:

  • Designing and implementing engineering systems for motor starters, air compressors, boilers, water treatment facilities, waste management facilities, purification and separator, medium and low voltage switchgear, voltage regulators and engine speed controllers, and process control of generation plant operations
  • Evaluating generator performance due to system loading, AVR and Governor troubleshooting, and auxiliary system operation to recommend improvements to reduce station service consumption and enhance generator reliability,
  • Technical oversite of major overhauls for diesel engines and ensures adherence to quality control requirements during preventative maintenance activities on engines and balance of plant equipment.
  • Developing, scheduling and executing capital projects on substation equipment for power and instrument transformers, reclosers, circuit breakers, motor operated devices, voltage regulators, etc.,
  • Leading or supporting root cause analyses for system failures and write engineering reports detailing findings and recommendations for equipment and process upgrades for enhanced system performance,
  • Actively participating in leadership meetings and offering recommendations to improve safety, efficiency and reliability, minimizing planned and unplanned outages.
  • Developing and implementing innovative engineering solutions which support GBPC’s long term business strategies and operational objectives.
  • Developing design standards, construction specifications and operations requirements to ensure efficient operation of generation, transmission, and distribution facilities to achieve performance goals,
  • Leading GBPC’s renewable initiatives, including small, medium and large scale solar and battery projects,
  • Reviewing and approving drawings and application documents related to GBPC’s Renewable Energy Rider (RER) program,
  • Create, document and define detailed engineering plans, processes, and procedures for the Energy Engineering department
  • Conducting various tests and quality assurance checks to verify the quality and compliance of completed projects
  • Performing engineering analysis of electrical and mechanical systems to identify areas of improvement along with failure modes while providing recommendations for system improvements,
  • Performing risk analysis, budget development and scheduling, to inform critical business decisions for project completion within scope, time, cost constraints,
  • Ensuring that systems are followed for Project drawings and all associated documentation,
  • Validating and maintaining equipment lists, equipment drawings and /or other key engineering documents as applicable,
  • Ensuring that engineering activity is compliant with project milestones,
  • Champions Engineering staff involvement in GBPC's contractor safety management program
  • Identifies risks and the mitigation thereof on all capital projects,
  • Developing presentations for senior leadership within GBPC on progress for capital projects

Lead people and accomplish staff results by:

  • Providing clear direction and setting performance goals for direct reports that are linked to GBPC’s strategy, ensuring accountability of responsibilities and results.
  • Managing employee time and work priorities, establishing work and vacation schedules and reviewing and approving time sheets.
  • Actively engaging in informal and formal performance management processes, ensuring employee goals are aligned to departmental and corporate work plans, providing regular and ongoing feedback, conducting formal mid-year and end of year assessments, and supporting employees in drafting career and development plans, and
  • Investing in talent development, mentoring and coaching employees for improved performance and career advancement and supporting the delivery of Competency Based Training within the business.
  • Contribute to team effort by completing other duties as assigned.

 Achieve financial results by:

  • Supporting leaders with the preparation and submission of annual capital and operational budgets.
  • Managing capital project cost by ensuring that projects are properly scoped, budgeted and tracked, and
  • Completing financial and work planning forecasts to ensure accuracy in the completion of purchase requisitions.
  • Seeking and implementing continuous improvements to engineering processes by leading the development of related policies, plans and procedures and providing feedback to leaders and employees on opportunities for development.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, engineering conferences, reviewing professional publications and participating in professional societies.

Academic/Skill/Experience Requirements:

The candidate will have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering from an ABET-accredited (or equivalent) program, with at least six years of engineering experience in an industrial environment. Proven experience delivering capital projects with budgets exceeding $500K. Professional Engineer (PE) registration preferred. Strong working knowledge of electrical codes, standards, and practices related to transmission and distribution systems. Proficient in reading P&IDs, process flow diagrams, single-line, and schematic drawings. Demonstrated commitment to safety, including solid knowledge of Lock Out/Tag Out practices. Brings strong technical, analytical, presentation, and project management skills, with a solid grasp of general engineering processes.
