POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Director of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), implements and maintains environmental health and safety initiatives, evaluation and control, operational risk management, waste management and emergency preparedness and regulatory compliance.
POSITION SCOPE:
They are responsible for direction, of other direct reports who support the HSE department. They ensure that proper practices and standards are employed, and proper documentation kept of modifications, inspections and other work performed. They ensure compliance with applicable environmental health and safety rules and regulations are in place and function appropriately and consistently throughout the company.
Maintain health, safety and environmental standards by:
Ensuring compliance with all safety policies and procedures,
Ensuring compliance with all environmental and health standards,
Ensuring that maintenance and safety procedures are adhered to, and
Completing all the required HSE training.
Contribute to GBPC goals by:
Ensuring all HSE processes and procedures are implemented and standardized across GBPC in alignment with Emera SMS and EMS and industry best practices.
Leading the development of balanced scorecard goals and work plans, directing activities of HSE employees to achieve same.
Utilizing the HSE metrics data to identify and reduce risk
Assisting in all aspects of incident investigation including verifying root cause and approving the implantation of preventative actions.
Developing, implementing, and modifying as necessary workplace guidelines and procedures designed to protect employees and the company
Providing advice and guidance to Grand Bahama Power Company Leadership relative to existing and future environmental and safety practices, issues, and concerns.
Lead people and accomplish staff results by:
Providing HSE Leadership training and operational support to all levels of the organization and across all functional groups.
Providing clear direction and sets performance goals that are linked to overall company strategy for direct reports, ensuring accountability of responsibilities and results.
Actively engaging in informal and formal performance management processes, ensuring employee goals are aligned to departmental and corporate work plans, providing regular and ongoing feedback, conducting formal mid-year and end of year assessments, and supporting employees in drafting career and development plans.
Investing in talent development, mentoring, and coaching employees for improved performance and career advancement.
Works with other to ensure that all company operations are compliant with established standards.
Establishes relationships with GBPC employees to further their knowledge, understanding and application of procedures, within their day-to-day activity, to improve their understanding of personal accountability.
Drive quality, innovation and technical competence by:
Analyzing, plans, designs, and implements training to improve safety performance.
Ensuring Emera HSE standards and best practices are at least the minimum standard implemented at GBPC.
Developing and maintaining professional relationships with the HSE leadership teams within the Emera group of Companies, and CARILEC members.
Developing and maintaining professional relationships with the HSE leadership teams within the Freeport Industrial Area.
Coordinating and conducting safety and environmental audits and draws upon necessary subject matter experts to ensure all compliance with GBPC policies and procedures is being addressed.
Continues to enhance knowledge of environmental regulations; their effect on existing projects and developing projects.
Representing the company at appropriate safety and environmental forums both inside and outside the company.
Achieve financial results by:
Proper and timely preparation and submission of annual budgets.
Controlling costs associated with modifications of GBPC property by ensuring that projects remain on schedule and on budget.
Leading and directing the team in completing financial and work planning forecasts and ensuring accuracy in the completion of purchase requisitions.
Managing the company’s environmental and safety related expenditures
The Director of Health, Safety and Environment will prioritize safety above all else and demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service excellence, continuous improvement, personal accountability, collaboration, and results.
This individual will be a confident, self-aware leader dedicated to the organization’s success and to developing others. They will embrace change, build and sustain strong relationships both internally and externally, and inspire high performance. Strong leadership, planning, organizational, and communication skills are essential, and additional professional qualifications in HSE are an asset.
The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Basic Science, or a related field, along with foundational training in supervisory leadership.
