Under general supervision, the Secondary Classroom ELD Teacher serves as a specialist for students who are learning English as a second language. The ELD Teacher works in a program designed to provide direct English Language Instruction in the classroom. Additionally, the ELD teacher collaborates with general education classroom teachers with selection of appropriate curricula, assessments and strategies to meet the unique needs of English Learners. The ELD teacher follows the regulations associated with ELD standards and reporting that pertain to CELDT testing. The ELD Teacher utilizes appropriate instructional skills, differentiated ELL instruction, SDAIE strategies and provides students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth; enables students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society; performs related duties as assigned.

The Secondary Classroom ELD Teacher is responsible for providing instruction in English Language Acquisition and provide ELL support in the following area of study: English (writing and literature),The incumbent participates in developing course curriculum, lesson plans and, provides instruction to students, maintains a safe and orderly classroom environment, assesses and evaluates student accomplishments, Assess Student CELDT scores and adjusts curriculum as needed, maintains required student records and files and communicates with faculty, students and parents regarding student progress.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • In cooperation with administrators and other staff, plans instructional objectives for assigned grade level and/or subject area consistent with courses of study and curriculum guides which meet MAAC’s educational goals and objectives.
  • Analyzes learning capacities of students and plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets their individual needs interests and abilities; develops and prepares lesson plans and appropriate instructional aides that reflect accommodation for individual student differences; shows written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Provides instruction in an assigned area in accordance with MAAC guidelines, adopted course outlines and instructional performance objectives for a specific area of study; guides the learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals.
  • Assists in the development of citizenship, responsible and ethical values, basic communication skills and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified by state law.
  • Provides appropriate individual and small group instruction to adapt curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes and cultural backgrounds.
  • Assesses and evaluates student accomplishments on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required; assesses student achievement through formal and informal testing; prepares grade reports; confers with colleagues, students and parents regarding student progress as needed; identifies student needs and works with other staff in assessing and helping students solve health, behavioral and learning problems; makes referrals to administrators or school counselor as needed.
  • Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, MAAC policy and administrative procedures; performs basic attendance accounting and other necessary reporting functions; compiles, maintains and files required student reports, records, files and documents; submits scholarship and citizenship grades to the registrar.
  • Participates in curriculum development and materials evaluation; assists and participates in the selection of books, instructional materials and supplies and maintains required inventory records.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and parents; maintains positive relationship with parents through school events, classroom visitations, conferences, telephone conversations, written communications and work samples so parents are aware of their student’s progress and adjustment.
  • Maintains professional relationships with students, parents, faculty and administration and follows ethics of the teaching profession; presents a positive role model for students that supports MAAC mission and objectives.
  • Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for educational-related purposes outside school hours when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Attends staff meetings, in-service activities and professional development as required; serves on staff committees as required.
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education provided by MAAC and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
  • May provides backup and substitution for other teaching staff as necessary.
  • May participate in supervising student events and activities as assigned.
  • May participate in designing and implementing curriculum for independent study courses.
  • May provide information to other teaching staff on classroom management techniques and teaching strategies; coordinating thematic teaching according to MAAC and core and state standards; working with teachers in the development of curriculum; assisting teachers in developing alternative methods and approaches to teaching; assisting in developing and implementing technology-assisted instruction.
  • Provides learning experiences necessary to ensure that students meet goals and objectives of the assigned course of study according to the student’s level of abilities and interests; may plan and implement projects, activities and field trips; may incorporate guest speakers, community service projects and volunteer activities into a class curriculum.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the physical limitations of the classroom and the needs and capabilities of the students or student groups involved.
  • Creates and maintains a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students; assists administration in implementing and maintaining policies and rules governing student life and conduct; establishes and maintains an effective learning climate within the school; this includes, but is not limited to:
    • Utilizing a variety of behavior management strategies and techniques;
    • Establishing and maintaining standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive classroom environment;
    • Maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and just manner;
    • Promoting the welfare of students at all times and taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;
    • Supervising hallways, student restrooms and immediate grounds as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Research-based instructional strategies for English Learners
  • Common Core State Standards, content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment for assigned instructional area (English literature, writing and ESL, Spanish, Project-based Learning, Critical Pedagogy).
  • Student academic growth and development applicable to the grade assigned.
  • Procedures and practices of classroom safety.
  • Principles and practices of sound business communication; correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Administrative practices and procedures, including record keeping and filing practices and procedures.

  • Instruct and encourage learning in high school-aged children.
  • Organize, set priorities and exercise sound judgment within areas of responsibility.
  • Organize and maintain confidential student records and files.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Use tact, discretion, courtesy and patience in dealing with sensitive and difficult individuals and situations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with administration, faculty, staff, student, parents and others encountered in the course of work.


  • Provides instruction according to his/her assignment in accordance with the course outlines, using appropriate course notes and suggestions which incorporate performance objectives for his/her specific area of study.
  • Provides, within his/her control learning experiences and a classroom environment necessary to ensure that students meet MCCS established goals and objectives and the more limited goals and objectives of the assigned course of study according to the student’s level of abilities and interests.
  • Maintains professional appearance


  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, Spanish, ELD or related field
  • Completion of a single subject teacher preparation program including successful student teaching
  • A preliminary five-year single subject teaching credential or a professional clear credential (preferred) through CCTC in English/ELD or Spanish
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible teaching experience in a high school or middle school, preferred
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • BCLAD certification required.
