POSITION SUMMARY

Repairs, maintains, and install steam, heating, refrigeration, compressed gas, vacuum, and plumbing systems. Determines defects in and maintains heating, water, and drainage systems in industrial or commercial establishments. Inspects systems to ascertain cause of malfunction. Repairs or replaces plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, commodes, water heaters, and hot water tanks. Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers on leaky faucets, mending or replacing burst or leaky pipes, and opening clogged drains.  Measures, cuts, threads, bends, an installs pipe, and pipefittings, on backflow preventers and vacuum and other assemblies. Reports directly to the Maintenance Program Manager.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.        1. Responsible for the maintenance and operation of the refrigeration systems including coolers, freezer, chillers and morgue units.

2.        2. Responsible for the maintenance and operation of the compressed gas and vacuum systems in the hospital and Vehicle Garage.

3.        3. Plumbing repairs as needed. Responsible for developing and implementing preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for use by the MHC Maintenance Program.

4.        4.  Test, rebuilds and replaces steam traps as required.

5.        5.  Keeps an accurate valve inventory and orders materials and consumables for adequate stock.

6.        6.  Operates and repairs all site related equipment including, but not limited to: high and low pressure boilers, air conditioning systems, emergency water and sewer pumps; air systems.

7.        7.  Ensures the safe operation of the hospital plumbing, domestic water, steam and heating piping and medical gas systems by periodically testing and making repairs as needed.

8.        8.  Repairs, maintains and upgrades piping systems and related equipment including HVAC and humidification.

9.        9.  Reads and interprets blueprints and schematics, manufacturer’s literature and specifications.

10.      10. Estimates materials required for repair or renovation projects, calculate man-hours, and provide this information to supervisor in writing.

11.      11. Complies with safety regulations including lockout/tag out, biohazard, confined space, and Right-to-Know, OSHA.

12.      12.  Assist or take lead with compliance testing, documentation and forms, in several areas of heating, cooling, ventilation, medical gas, and vacuum, dental gas, fire alarm, fire suppression, humidity, plumbing, and other.

Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Pipefitter/Plumber I:

High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of an apprenticeship in a related trade with valid journeyman license. Must possess a State of Alaska, Plumber’s Certificate of Fitness. Preferred experience directly related to hospital operations. EPA-approved refrigerant reclamation certified, or obtain within one year of hire. Med Gas 6010 or 6040 certification preferred.  Must possess a current Alaska driver’s license and have a good enough driving history to be insured to drive Maniilaq vehicles.

 

Pipefitter/Plumber II:

Meets the requirements of Pipefitter/Plumber Technician I plus: Five (5) years’ experience directly related to hospital operations. Three (3) years’ experience in refrigeration involving residential, commercial and industrial systems. Comprehensive knowledge of compressor and refrigeration systems.  EPA-approved refrigerant reclamation certification required.
