POSITION SUMMARY
Worksunder the supervision of the Central Stores and Sterile Manager. Performs a variety of sterile processingtechnician duties, including, but not limited to, sorting, decontamination, (re)assembling, and (re) wrapping of equipment and supplies for sterilization,operating sterilization equipment, monitoring quality controls, maintaining accuraterecords, dispensing and retrieving various supplies and equipment upon request,maintaining inventories, inspecting and verifying instruments and equipment arein good condition and functioning properly, and verifying the repair orreplacement of defective instruments and equipment. Reviews daily inventory andperforms stocking of the Omnicell system. Understands the importance of asepticand sterile technique when performing assigned duties, and maintains a clean,orderly, and safe environment. Prioritizesworkflow, responding to routine and emergency user requests in an efficient andtimely manner. Possesses excellent customer service skills. Assigned to on-callafter hours on a rotating basis.
PRINCIPALDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of InfectionPrevention and Control, as it relates to sterile processing.
2. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the standards andguidelines governing sterile processing, as mandated and/or published by OSHA,CDC, FDA, APIC, ANSI/AAMI, AORN, and other applicable regulatory bodies.
3. Demonstratesthorough knowledge of sterilization processes, machines, supplies, equipment,and instruments.
4. Performs decontamination of equipment, instruments,and medical devices in accordance with established procedures and nationalguidelines.
5. Performs wrapping and packaging of equipment,instruments, and medical devices in accordance with established procedures andnational guidelines.
6. Performs sterilization of equipment, instruments, andmedical devices in accordance with established procedures and nationalguidelines.
7. Monitors Quality Control indicators throughout the program,including chemical, biological, and equipment operating parameters in accordancewith established policies, procedures, and national guidelines.
8. Processes and redistributes all instruments, equipmentand supplies returned to Central Sterile Services in accordance withestablished procedures and national guidelines.
9. Maintains inventory and stocks Omnicell system.
10. Coordinates with the Bio-Medical Equipment Techniciansto maintain scheduled preventative maintenance on CSS equipment.
11. Assists program manager to develop and update policiesand procedures for Central Sterile Services.
12. Maintains annual competency on all equipment used toperform tasks in Central Sterile Services and participates in annual continuingeducation pertaining to sterile processing from an accredited source,equivalent to 12 CEUs per year, as a condition of employment.
13. Prioritizes responsibilities to ensure completion ofduties in a timely manner.
14. Participates in projects to improve program processesand workflow; including providing in-service education on topics related toCentral Sterile Services to other related programs.
MINIMUMREQUIREMENTS
SterileProcess Technician I, Range 13
High school diploma or equivalent. Must comprehend and speakEnglish, sufficient to read, write, and follow oral and/or writteninstructions, including complex Instructions for Use (IFU) manuals for programequipment. Basic computer skills and ability to utilize various computerprograms including, but not limited to, internet search engines, MicrosoftOutlook, and Microsoft Office. Ability to lift 40 pounds and stand for longperiods of time. Familiarity with medical terminology. If lacking SterileProcessing certification at time of hire, enrollment in sterile processing(CRCST or CBSPD) course by the end of probationary period desired; progresstowards obtaining sterile processing certification within 1 year of the date of completion of a sterile processing course desired. Potential for exposure tocommunicable diseases and hazardous materials. Must fully understand therelationship of microorganisms and infection prevention and control in centralsterile services. Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality. Requiresstrong communication, interpersonal, customer service, and organizationalskills. Must be self-motivated, accountable, and attentive to details.
PREFERRED SKILLS IN ADDITION TOMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
One year or more experience asSterile Processing Technician or Operating Room Technician. Sterile Processingcertification (CRCST or CBSPD) preferred. GI Scope certification (CFER)preferred. Knowledge of sterilization supplies, equipment, processes, andinstruments. Knowledge of organizing, containing, and transporting items ofvarying compounds, textures, or quantities. Knowledge of transporting anddisposing of hazardous materials and sharp objects according to establishednational guidelines and hospital procedure. Knowledge of cleaning anddecontamination procedures of various instruments and equipment. Knowledge ofreprocessing procedures for various equipment and instruments, including scopereprocessing using high-level disinfection and steam sterilization. Knowledgeof wrapping and repackaging sterilized instruments. Skill in usingsterilization equipment and instruments. Skill in arranging instruments intrays and kits. Skill in maintaining quality control and reprocessing records.Ability to maintain inventory and stock Omnicell system.
Sterile Process TechnicianII, Range 14
Sameminimum requirements as level I position, plus the noted preferred skills, plusthree years or more of Sterile Processing experience. Additionally, SterileProcessing certification (CRCST or CBSPD) required. GI Scope certification(CFER) preferred.
