POSITION SUMMARY

 

Provides support services to the laboratory technical staff and nursing. Acts as a laboratory information resource to health center staff and clients. Processes specimens for testing. Provides appropriate and timely acquisition of patient specimens by capillary and venipuncture. Performs tests of moderate complexity and a variety of clerical tasks related to specimen processing and patient billing.  Reports to the Laboratory Manager.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Procures specimens appropriate for the requirements of ordered tests.
  2. Maintains a system providing proper patient preparation and proper specimen collection, identification, preservation, transportation, and processing.
  3. Understands hospital infection control policies and antiseptic collection procedures.
  4. Enters patient information and test results into laboratory information system.
  5. Processes specimens for routine and STAT work using the laboratory information system.
  6. Participates in the training and orientation of new employees.
  7. Performs tests of moderate complexity to the extent of training, education, expertise and technical ability.
  8. Provides phlebotomy services whenever required, including on-call as needed. Responds to internal or external disasters as needed.
  9. Conducts work in such a manner as to be organized and meet established deadlines.
  10. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to the collection of specimens and the interpretation of results.  Responsible for age specific knowledge.
  11. Is clear and concise, both verbally and in writing when communicating with staff and the public. Builds effective, supportive relationships with co-workers and internal/external customers. Uses positive interpersonal skills to promote success of team members and promote laboratory and health center goals.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

 

As Point of Care (POC) Trainer

1.       Under the supervision of the POC Coordinator, provide periodic training and competency assessment in all POC test menus to various departments.

2.       Upon request, provide POC training whenever it is needed.

3.       Travel to Village Clinics to provide annual competency assessment if needed.

4.       Assist POC Coordinator to create training plan and maintain list of trainee to ensure all staff members are compliant.

Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

High school diploma or equivalent. Phlebotomy certification or two years’ experience performing Phlebotomy skills.
