Title:  Sterile Process Technician I/ II/III                                                                     Range:  13/14/15

POSITION SUMMARY

Works under the supervision of the Central Stores and Sterile Manager.  Performs a variety of sterile processing technician duties, including, but not limited to, sorting, decontamination, (re) assembling, and (re) wrapping of equipment and supplies for sterilization, operating sterilization equipment, monitoring quality controls, maintaining accurate records, dispensing and retrieving various supplies and equipment upon request, maintaining inventories, inspecting and verifying instruments and equipment are in good condition and functioning properly, and verifying the repair or replacement of defective instruments and equipment. Reviews daily inventory and performs stocking of the Omnicell system. Understands the importance of aseptic and sterile technique when performing assigned duties, and maintains a clean, orderly, and safe environment.  Trains new staff to Prioritizes workflow, responding to routine and emergency user requests in an efficient and timely manner. Possesses excellent customer service skills. Assigned to on-call after hours on a rotating basis.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.       Demonstrates thorough knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control, as it relates to sterile processing.

2.       Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the standards and guidelines governing sterile processing, as mandated and/or published by OSHA, CDC, FDA, APIC, ANSI/AAMI, AORN, and other applicable regulatory bodies.

3.       Demonstrates thorough knowledge of sterilization processes, machines, supplies, equipment, and instruments.

4.       Performs decontamination of equipment, instruments, and medical devices in accordance with established procedures and national guidelines.

5.       Performs wrapping and packaging of equipment, instruments, and medical devices in accordance with established procedures and national guidelines.

6.       Performs sterilization of equipment, instruments, and medical devices in accordance with established procedures and national guidelines.

7.       Monitors Quality Control indicators throughout the program, including chemical, biological, and equipment operating parameters in accordance with established policies, procedures, and national guidelines.

8.       Processes and redistributes all instruments, equipment and supplies returned to Central Sterile Services in accordance with established procedures and national guidelines.  

9.       Maintains inventory and stocks Omnicell system.

10.    Coordinates with the Bio-Medical Equipment Technicians to maintain scheduled preventative maintenance on CSS equipment.

11.    Assists program manager to develop and update policies and procedures for Central Sterile Services.

12.    Maintains annual competency on all equipment used to perform tasks in Central Sterile Services and participates in annual continuing education pertaining to sterile processing from an accredited source, equivalent to 12 CEUs per year, as a condition of employment.

13.    Prioritizes responsibilities to ensure completion of duties in a timely manner.

14.    Participates in projects to improve program processes and workflow; including providing in-service education on topics related to Central Sterile Services to other related programs.

Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

Sterile Process Technician I, Range 13

High school diploma or equivalent. Must comprehend and speak English, sufficient to read, write, and follow oral and/or written instructions, including complex Instructions for Use (IFU) manuals for program equipment. Basic computer skills and ability to utilize various computer programs including, but not limited to, internet search engines, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Office. Ability to lift 40 pounds and stand for long periods of time. Familiarity with medical terminology. If lacking Sterile Processing certification at time of hire, enrollment in sterile processing (CRCST or CBSPD) course by the end of probationary period desired; progress towards obtaining sterile processing certification within 1 year of the date of completion of a sterile processing course desired. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials. Must fully understand the relationship of microorganisms and infection prevention and control in central sterile services. Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality. Requires strong communication, interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills. Must be self-motivated, accountable, and attentive to details.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS IN ADDITION TO MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

One year or more experience as Sterile Processing Technician or Operating Room Technician. Sterile Processing certification (CRCST or CBSPD) preferred. GI Scope certification (CFER) preferred. Knowledge of sterilization supplies, equipment, processes, and instruments. Knowledge of organizing, containing, and transporting items of varying compounds, textures, or quantities. Knowledge of transporting and disposing of hazardous materials and sharp objects according to established national guidelines and hospital procedure. Knowledge of cleaning and decontamination procedures of various instruments and equipment. Knowledge of reprocessing procedures for various equipment and instruments, including scope reprocessing using high-level disinfection and steam sterilization. Knowledge of wrapping and repackaging sterilized instruments. Skill in using sterilization equipment and instruments. Skill in arranging instruments in trays and kits. Skill in maintaining quality control and reprocessing records. Ability to maintain inventory and stock Omnicell system.

 

Sterile Process Technician II, Range 14

Same minimum requirements as level I position, plus the noted preferred skills, plus three years or more of Sterile Processing experience. Additionally, Sterile Processing certification (CRCST or CBSPD) required. GI Scope certification (CFER) preferred.

 

 Sterile Process Technician III, Range 15

Same minimum requirements as level I & II position, plus GI Scope certification (CFER) within one calendar year. This employee directs a structured learning experiences for new employees. Prepares, facilitates, monitors, evaluates and documents training activities. Assess training and identify internal and external training programs to address competency gaps. Possesses the ability to present complex information to a variety of audiences.
