POSITION SUMMARY

Provides comprehensive optometric technician services. Assists optometrists as directed or needed. Maintains the regional optical shop. Travels to each of the 11 villages and assists the optometrists to provide eye care services.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs moderately complex clerical and reception duties with minimal supervision:

1.       Performs a variety of administrative and clerical duties including answering phones, distributing mail, taking appointments, placing orders, typing correspondence, and making travel arrangements.

2.       Responsible for maintaining the patient schedule, and insuring that patient’s access to services is optimal.

3.       Complies and submits necessary reports.

4.       Physically able to lift fifty (50) pounds of luggage.

5.       Other duties as assigned.

     Acquires the following patient care and opticianry skills through on the job training and supervision by the optometrist:

6.       Performs diagnostic testing: visual field testing, optical coherence tomography testing.

7.       Performs various entrance test: visual acuity, intraocular pressure measurements an automated refraction/keratometry.

8.       Administers medication as directed.

9.       Neutralizes patient’s glasses with a lensometer and records appropriately.

10.    Maintain displays in the eye clinic, and ensures the exam room equipment are clean and arranged.

11.    Provided opticianry services: assisting patients with frame and lens selections, taking frame and facial measurements, ordering glasses, verifying and dispensing glasses, teaches patients how to care for their eyeglasses, and making repairs to glasses.

12.    Maintains the regional optical shop including preparing and maintaining dispensary display and frame boards, monitoring frame and accessory inventory, and reordering supplies as needed.

13.    Travel frequently, up to 10 weeks annually, in a light aircraft. Providing eye care services to beneficiaries in the villages.

Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Optometric Technician I:

High school Diploma or GED required. One year customer service experience. Intermediate level computer skills. Must be willing to work as part of a team. Must have sufficient skills to carry out clerical functions including typing and using a variety of computer programs.

Optometric Technician II:

Requirements of Optometric Technician I plus one year experience in the eye clinic. Must be familiar with Cerner.

Optometric Technician III:

Must meet the qualifications of Optometric Technician II plus two years of experience in the eye clinic.
