POSITION SUMMARY

Provides basic patient care including, but not limited to: age specific assistance with ADL’s, taking vital signs and recording appropriately, assists physicians and nurses with procedures, work with patient scheduling, patient appointment letters, patient travel, and speaking to patients on the phone. Must be able to support the association and hospital mission, goals and objectives. Reports directly to the Outpatient Services Manager.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.  1. Assists with admission, discharge, transport and transfer of patients.

2.  2. Prepares patients for and assists with exams, tests and special procedures.

3.  3. Assists patients in handling of valuables and personal belongings per hospital policy.

4.  4. Provides basic patient care, as per the scope of practice of the certification/training.

5.  5. Understands the developmental needs of all patients throughout the continuum of life.

6.  6. Takes all vital signs: temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respirations, weight, height, head and girth measurements. Documents properly. Recognizes and notifies nurse of any abnormal results.

7.  7. Performs patient treatments as directed within personal scope of practice.

8.  8. Collects, prepares and transports specimens to the lab, sets up for specific clinics, performs POC tests as directed by the nurse and documents appropriately.

9.  9. Initiates CPR and other emergency measures as required. Adheres to established emergency and disaster procedures.

10.10. Assists in the maintenance of unit supplies and nourishments, restocking, reordering and checking for out of date supplies.

11.11. Maintains cleanliness and safety of a variety of equipment, reports any hazardous equipment and seeks repair when necessary.

12.12. Assists in maintaining a safe environment for all patients and keeps all areas orderly and clean

13.13. Maintains confidentiality in regard to patient care information and chart contents

14.14. Performs computer entry as needed.

15.15. Maintains documentation and assists with patient paperwork according to established policy.

16.16. Participates in unit or hospital quality improvement projects, attends staff meetings and job related training as required.

17.17. Uses effective communication skills in working with health care team, patients and families. Maintains a pleasant and helpful attitude at all times, greets visitors and answers telephone appropriately.

18.18. Treats all patients with dignity and respect ensuring that they are sensitive to the patients comfort and privacy.

19.19. Carries out reception duties including receiving, screening, and forwarding incoming phone calls and prioritizing and passing on information.

20.20. Performs clerical duties as required to support assigned Care Team, including typing letters, memos, minutes, reports, faxing and copying.

21.21. Complies and inputs data into computer system as directed by the Care Team.

22.22. Requests charts from medical records and assists in Chart Reviews.

23.23. Assists with Care Team Projects as assigned including patient databases and pending follow-up.

24.24. Assists with the referral process, including patient travel, in collaboration with nursing as directed.

25.25. Assists Care Team with patient letters and travel worksheets as directed.

26.26. Schedule appointments at MHC as directed by the Care Team.

27.27. Proficient in the use of the current Electronic Health Record.

28.28. Assists providers and nurses by pulling reports as needed.

29.29. Collaborates with appropriate case manager concerning problems in referring the patient.

30.30. Assists the Telerad x-rays for radiology as directed by the nurse or provider.

31.31. Is self-directed and maintains current licensure.

32.32. Has demonstrated knowledge of customer service concepts and practices.

33.33. Maintains statistics for all department clinics and VTC’s.

34.34. Assists with VTC set up.

35.35. Makes reminder calls and maintains schedule for VTC’s.

36.36. Makes reminder calls for specialty clinic appointments to ensure labs/xrays are obtained in advance.

37.37. Tracks referrals to field clinics to complete and close when appropriate.

38.38. Review Medicaid for travel to field clinics.

39.39. Assist with ANMC field clinic provider travel/housing.

Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Specialty Clinic Tech/Support I:

Basic life support or must obtain within 6 months of hire. Must successfully complete a medical terminology course within one year of hire. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and spend long periods of time standing and walking. Maybe exposed to communicable diseases and hazardous materials. Must be able to pass the core competencies assigned to the unit annually. Must have the desire and ability to work with individuals under great stress. Must be willing to rotate shifts and be floated to other units as needed i.e. ambulatory clinic or inpatient. Must provide proof of some type of formal training or prior training with taking vital signs.

 

Specialty Clinic Tech/Support II:

Meet the requirements of Specialty Technician I, plus must maintain some formal health training beyond ETT i.e. Certified Nursing Assistant certification from any state, Medical Technician (EMT II), or CHAP. Olympus scope training within 6 months of hire. One year of health care experience preferred.
