POSITION SUMMARY

 

Performs all tests commonly performed in a hospital laboratory.  Maintains, operates, and troubleshoots equipment.  Performs quality control. 

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1.    Performs a full range of clinical laboratory tests and examinations in all sections of the laboratory (chemistry, microbiology, hematology, urinalysis, blood bank, specimen dispatch).

2.    Follows established laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.

3.    Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on all instruments.  Implements and monitors daily quality control, and advises on a course of action when values are out of range.  Documents all corrective action. Notifies lead technologist of problems and actions taken.

4.    Performs patient specimen testing. Ensures sample suitability. Evaluates, judges and interprets test results and ensures accuracy.  Identifies and resolves inconsistencies in patient results.

5.    Accepts and processes samples for on-site testing or forwards to contracted reference laboratories. 

6.    Maintains all record keeping systems in compliance with established procedures.  Enters and verifies results using the laboratory information system.

7.    Assists, as instructed, in orientation of new employees, and other medical personnel.  Participates in quality improvement process/projects, both in the lab and around the Health Center.

8.    Shares after hours on-call, weekend and holiday coverage on a rotational basis.  Responds in case of an internal or external disaster.

9.    Assists the Laboratory Manager in administrative duties as assigned.

10. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to the collection of specimens and the interpretation of results.

11. Is clear and concise, both verbally and in writing when communicating with staff and the public.  Builds effective, supportive relationships with co-workers and internal/external customers.  Uses positive interpersonal skills to promote success of team members and promote laboratory and health center goals.

Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related Life Science field from an accredited institution.  MT (ASCP) registry, or certification as Clinical Laboratory Scientist by NCA or MT (AMT); or obtain within 6 months of hire.
