POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of a Tribal Doctor, provides direct health care through traditional medicine and practices to patients, as well as information regarding traditional food and healthy lifestyles.  This position reports directly to the Tribal Doctor Supervisor or designee.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Continue the chain of traditional healing using plants, etc., from local areas.

2.    Participates in continuous improvement process to enhance quality of services delivery to the clients of the Tribal Doctor Program.

3.    Travels with Tribal Doctor to the villages to provide services.

4.    Refers clients who need further observation or follow-up to the MHC and Community Practitioners in the villages.

5.    Records information on activity log and on client’s medical record form.

6.    Provides education on nutritious traditional foods, healthy lifestyle practices and preventative health care to clients, other Maniilaq care providers, and to the general public.

7.    Participates in the demonstration of traditional medicine and hands on health care techniques to students in schools.

8.    Evaluated annually by a team of Tribal Doctors.

9.    Ensures another staff member is present when working on all patients.

10.Assist in daily actives at the Long Term Care center as directed by the schedule and/or by the Elder Services Director.

11.Provides for a monthly educational session for the elders based upon traditional healing practices, preventative health care and healthy lifestyle practices.

12.During intervals when Tribal Doctor is not seeing patients, interacting with elders and Long Term Care staff to ensure day shift responsibilities are completed.  This may include assisting clients with hygiene, grooming and participating activities.

 

Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Preferably speaks both Inupiaq and the English language competently. Familiar with Inupiaq culture, environment and able to relate to the people and clients.  Must have interest in learning all aspects of traditional medicine and health care practices.  Must obtain BLS certification within six months of hire. This position requires a self-motivated person with enthusiasm for promoting activity for Tribal Doctor Program.
