About the Camp: Kotzebue Playmakers is a culturally grounded summer camp dedicated to fostering creativity, community, and cultural pride through arts and performance. The Drama Summer Camp Counselor will lead and support drama-focused activities for youth ages 10–16. The ideal candidate will be organized, passionate about drama and theater, and have strong knowledge of Inupiaq values. This person will help guide campers in creating and performing original or adapted theatrical pieces while also helping to build or craft set pieces and costumes using traditional or practical techniques. This position reports directly to the HRALI Program Assistant.

 

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Plan, lead, and supervise daily drama activities, including acting exercises, script development, and rehearsals.
  2. Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful environment aligned with Inupiaq values such as cooperation, respect for others, humility, and sharing.
  3. Direct youth in a final performance or showcase at the end of the camp.
  4. Assist with set and costume design, including building set pieces or integrating traditional Inupiaq sewing and crafting techniques.
  5. Ensure camper safety and engagement throughout the camp day.
  6. Collaborate with other counselors and staff to coordinate schedules and camp-wide events.
  7. Maintain supplies, help manage time efficiently, and support a smooth daily structure.
Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

Experience working with children or teens (preferably ages 10–16). Interest and/or experience in drama, theater, or performance arts. Strong organizational and leadership skills. Deep understanding of Inupiaq values and a commitment to integrating them into programming. Useful but not required: Experience with traditional Inupiaq sewing, crafting, or strong construction/building skills for theater sets. Background in drama education, youth development, or cultural programming. CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain). Ability to adapt plans creatively and manage group dynamics positively.
