POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides patient care in Inpatient, ER and OB as an RN, while providing oversight of staff and the unit during the shift. Supports the hospital mission, goals and objectives.  Reports directly to the Inpatient Manager.

                                               

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.                   Makes patient assignments for oncoming shift, matching the nurse's skills with the patient needs when possible.

2.                   Maintains knowledge of patients' conditions throughout the shift, in order to ensure appropriate coverage and to maintain safe environment.

3.                   Makes bed assignments on patient admission.

4.                   Informs Inpatient Manager of any changing patient conditions requiring administrative intervention.

5.                   Completes all required shift reports, staffing book updates. Follows staff matrix.

6.                   Assigns meal times and cleaning/restocking duties as appropriate.

7.                   Ensures that the Omnicell Medstation is free of unsecured medications and narcotic (controlled substances) discrepancies at the start and end of each shift (before clinical staff go off-duty

8.                   Ensures crash carts in the OB, medical-surgical and ED are checked each shift per policy.

9.                   Provides/arranges orientation and training to new staff on their shift.

10.                Prepares for medevacs.

11.                Reviews all incident reports and medication error forms to ensure that they are filled out completely and correctly. Additionally, the charge nurse addresses the problem at hand and/or refers the incident to the appropriate person.

12.                Serves as the first link of Maniilaq's "Chain of Command" and therefore appropriately handle patient/family/physician complaints as they occur.

13.                Assists staff members with interpersonal conflicts in order to enable the work to get done.

14.                Serves as a resource person for hospital staff, helping find information or assisting in determining where the information may be found, and maintains required AHA CPR, ACLS, PALS, NRP, NIHSS etc. 

15.                Ensures that any bodies being placed in the morgue, either from within or outside the hospital, are secured appropriately by security.

16.                Serves as liaison with other supervisors as necessary.

17.                Participates in quality assurance/performance improvement activities at organizational and departmental levels as required.

18.                Ensures approved customer service model is practiced by all staff each shift. 

 

Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Must have RN license in good standing and be eligible to apply for an Alaska licensure as a Registered Nurse. Must have prior experience in one or more of the Inpatient areas (Medical, OB or ER).
