POSITION SUMMARY

Performs nursing duties in the care of adult and pediatric patients in medical/surgical, pediatric, obstetrical, and emergency room settings in the hospital and in medical evacuation situations.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, and socio-cultural needs of the acute care patient and his/her family in collaboration with the RN staff.
  2. Observes the patient's clinical condition; recognizes serious situations and with the RN staff, identifies, interprets, and initiates appropriate nursing interventions.
  3. Screens patients, documenting chief complaint, vital signs, and pertinent information on appropriate medical record forms.
  4. Accurately transcribe orders by: documenting per policy or unit practice, prepares lab/x-ray slips, assures orders are completed.  Assists client in collecting lab specimens observing Standard Precautions.  Assists in transporting clients to other departments. 
  5. Performs treatments or procedures in accordance with hospital policy as ordered by licensed providers or nursing after demonstrating competency.
  6. Administers medications upon physician's orders.
  7. Communicates with RN staff and the charge nurse in regards to the patient progress toward health goals.  Revises patient care plan as needed per protocol.
  8. Documents patient care per hospital policy. 
  9. Assists clients in preparing for exams and assists physicians with exam if needed.
  10. Assists physicians and nursing staff as needed in rendering emergency care to patients.  When notified in advance, prepares appropriate materials for emergency treatment.
  11. Maintains adequate supplies and equipment.
  12. In the absence of lab personnel draws blood via vena puncture for tests after training and competency of performance.
  13. Maintains current knowledge of department/hospital policies and procedures.
  14. Assumes responsibility and accountability for individual nursing judgments and actions.
  15. Understands the developmental needs of all patients throughout the continuum of life.  Is able to adjust care to these needs.  Documentation reflects this understanding.  
  16. Provides guidance and leadership to other personnel in the form of in-services, orientation, and participation in committee activities.
  17. Attends in-services and obtains required continuing education credits as required.
  18. Participates in organizational and departmental performance improvement activities.
  19. Safeguards the patient’s right to privacy by judiciously protecting information of a confidential nature.
Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from an accredited LPN program. Must have LPN license in good standing and be eligible to apply for an Alaska licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse.  Ability to lift up to 70 pounds and spend long periods of time standing and walking. May be exposed to communicable diseases and hazardous materials. Must be able to pass the core competencies assigned to the unit annually.
