POSITION SUMMARY

The Remote Maintenance Worker (RMW) provides training and technical assistance to rural utility water operators both in the office and in the field. The RMW is expected to possess, or be willing to develop, a comprehensive range of construction and general maintenance skills including but not limited to pipe fitting, electrical work, and carpentry and must be able to effectively teach these skills both in person and via video conferencing. The RMWs primary responsibility is to deliver on-the-job training and instruction to utility operators in the field, emphasizing preventative maintenance of water and sewer infrastructure. In emergency situations, the RMW may be required to travel and provide technical assistance on short notice. The RMW also reviews sanitation facility designs and construction projects for operation and maintenance considerations, and conducts routine communication with operators and site visits. This position reports to the Environmental Health Manager.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Obtains water and wastewater operator certifications water treatment, water distribution, wastewater collection, and wastewater treatment.
  2. Stays in routine contact with water and sewer utility staff and provides over-the-phone technical assistance and troubleshooting.
  3. Assists with the development and implementation of preventative maintenance (PM) plans, maintaining critical spare part lists, updating O&M manuals, and maintaining inventories of tools and equipment for existing and new facilities.
  4. Establishes and upholds a regional travel schedule to include ~20 trips per year to provide routine operation and maintenance support for each community served by the RMW grant.
  5. Provides on-the-job training and technical assistance to operators up to Level II water systems in the production and distribution of drinking water to meet or exceed State and Federal standards. 
  6. Provide technical assistance to operators of up to Level II wastewater collection and treatment facilities in the treatment and disposal of wastewater to meet or exceed State and Federal standards.
  7. Responsible for the coordination and of formal classroom training opportunities and continuing education unit instruction necessary for water and sewer operators to maintain skills and operator certifications.
  8. Helps utilities order the supplies and equipment needed for operation and maintenance of the water and sewage systems.
  9. Review sanitation facility designs and inspect construction of new sanitation facility projects for operation and maintenance considerations.
  10. Assist local officials and governing bodies to determine costs associated with the operation and maintenance of their sanitation facilities.
  11. Attend regular meetings with project managers, design engineers, regional technical assistance providers, and Office of Environmental Health (OEH) team meetings when not traveling.
  12. Provides intermittent emergency response assistance and technical assistance as necessary related to emergency repairs on village water and sewer systems.
  13. Prepare detailed trip reports and quarterly summaries that describe activities, root-cause troubleshooting, system deficiencies, and proposed corrective actions.
  14. Identifies capital improvement projects to correct structural deficiencies and shares information with utility and sanitation project managers.
  15. Assists utilities with water and wastewater sampling requirements and logistical support to certified laboratories.
Cross-trains relief employees to provide RMW coverage and additional field support during times of need.
Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

Remote Maintenance Worker I

High school diploma or GED equivalent. Two years of work experience in water and sewer operation and maintenance; or a related vocational certification/degree. They should be able to read, comprehend, and communicate effectively, particularly regarding all safety aspects of small water system utility operations. Must possess a thorough knowledge of utility systems and the ability to instruct utility operators. Must attend operator training opportunities and progressively increase in operator certification. Applicants must possess a current Alaska driver’s license and maintain an insurable driving record for Maniilaq vehicles. The position also requires the ability to lift up to 70 pounds.

 

Remote Maintenance Worker II

5 years’ work experience as Remote Maintenance Worker I. Must possess active operator certifications in Water Treatment Level 2, Water Distribution Level 2, Wastewater Collection 2, and Wastewater Treatment 2.

 

Remote Maintenance Worker III

5 years’ work experience as Remote Maintenance Worker II. Must possess active operator certifications as detailed in Remote Maintenance Worker II. In addition, holds a current certification in backflow prevention or other appropriate advanced certification that enhances RMW service delivery.
