POSITION SUMMARY
The Deputy Program Manager / Nurse Educator supports the Diabetes Program and assumes management duties in the absence of the Program Manager. This role combines clinical leadership, diabetes education, and hands-on involvement in culturally appropriate community outreach across the Northwest of Alaska. The Nurse Educator provides high-quality, patient-centered care across the diabetes continuum, focusing on both treatment and prevention. The role includes direct patient care, education, case management, and oversight of outreach activities. This position works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams and plays a key role in addressing the unique needs of communities in the Maniilaq service area. Reports directly to the Diabetes Program Manager or designee.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assumes supervisory and administrative responsibility for the Diabetes Program in the absence of the Program Manager.
Supports staff through mentoring, training, and performance evaluation.
Assists with planning, evaluating, and improving the quality and effectiveness of diabetes services.
Ensures compliance with SDPI grant guidelines, and federal/state regulations.
Utilizes the SDPI Dashboard to support data tracking, analysis, and reporting.
Attends required SDPI webinars, IHS coordination meetings, and contributes to timely submission of grant reports.
Provides case management, care coordination, and diabetes education to adults.
Conducts foot exams and chronic disease screenings in clinics and during village outreach.
Collaborates with primary care and specialty providers on care planning and referrals.
Actively participates in culturally relevant outreach and prevention activities including but not limited to 5K runs, half marathons, ice fishing, berry picking, and school-based events.
Coordinates with Program staff to deliver education, screenings, and yearly Diabetes field clinic in regional communities.
Educates patients and families on self-management, nutrition, medication, and lifestyle modification.
Promotes community awareness of diabetes prevention and wellness through presentations, events, and resource development.
Leads or contributes to public education campaigns and interdepartmental training.
Assists with policy development and quality improvement efforts.
Provides timely documentation, reporting, and maintenance of program records and communications.
Performs clerical support tasks and maintains organized and confidential files.
Pursues ongoing education in diabetes management and nursing practice.
Achieves Foot Care Certification and CDCES credentials within one year of hire if not already certified.
Participates in professional conferences, continuing education, and networking opportunities.
Provides backup support for program tasks as needed, including medication refills, appointment coordination, and patient follow-up.
Supports Maniilaq’s mission and vision by delivering high-quality, culturally sensitive diabetes care that respects the values and traditions of the communities served. Through education, outreach, and prevention efforts, the RN helps individuals manage their health and empowers families to build stronger, healthier communities.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Alaska. Minimum of 1 year of Med/Surg experience. Case management or chronic disease management experience preferred. Strong knowledge of diabetes and community health. Willingness to obtain Foot Care Certification and CDCES within one year of hire (if not currently held). CPR/BLS certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months). Proficient with electronic health record systems and Microsoft Office. Excellent communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a rural, cross-cultural setting. Willingness to travel for community outreach and village visits.
