POSITION SUMMARY
Functions as first line supervisor in the management of the Emergency Department, Inpatient, OB nursing staff. Responsible for appropriate unit assignment taking into consideration patient acuity, age specific requirements, and diagnosis. Participates in the development of the provision of care programs policies and procedures. Delegates duties to appropriate staff members. Assists the Inpatient Manager in providing nursing leadership and acts as a resource person for the nursing staff. Participates in the decision making processes and nursing research to modify and/or improve the delivery of care in the Health Services Program in conjunction with the Chief Nursing Officer. Reports directly to the Inpatient Manager or designee.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Establishes and maintains standards of patient care by providing operational leadership and direction for nursing care staff in the emergency program.
Works a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the Inpatient Department. Any schedule changes will be overseen by this position.
Completes annual performance reviews for Inpatient nursing staff.
Participates in organizational and program activities and provides leadership in program improvement activities to maximize staff performance.
Coordinates collection, analysis, and preparation of information, including QI and PI initiatives based on Evidence Based Practice, required to evaluate nursing services provided and reports in timely manner.
Ensures standardization of Nursing Policies and Procedures for Inpatient Department.
Participates in activities, which promote professional growth and fulfillment of goals for self and staff.
Identify and monitor staff development needs and make referrals as indicated to nursing education/staff development thru a yearly needs assessment and department monthly education calendar.
Provides supervision for the Inpatient Department, assuring staffing levels are appropriate; training is given as needed and serves as resource for staff, and assists with clinical procedures as needed.
Maintain nursing staff by recruiting, orienting and training clinical staff. Prudent utilization of agency nurses.
Assists Inpatient Manager with the management of all nursing staff disciplinary actions and compliance with Performance Improvement Plans as needed.
Completes State of Alaska Trauma Registry monthly.
Works with CNO and provider staff to establish and implement plan for Trauma Level 4 designation.
Operate as the Trauma Coordinator for Trauma Level 4 designation to include: establish and chair a trauma committee and be a liaison to the community for trauma education and outreach.
Front line of customer service for the Inpatient Department, with bedside rounding and real oversight of staff.
Audits the implementation and effectiveness of Nursing Care programs for appropriateness of the nursing services provided and reports results to the Inpatient Manager for evaluation of performance and performance improvement planning.
Assists with the coordination of patients needing air medical evacuation, to include ensuring all paperwork is complete.
Available for nurse leader on call as assigned by CNO.
Manages timesheets and PTO requests for Inpatient Department staff.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must currently be licensed as a registered nurse. State of Alaska Nurses license preferred. Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university. Five or more years of health care experience preferably at least one year in health care supervision and three years in an emergency department. ACLS, PALS, and BLS required. TNCC preferred within one year of hire. Charge nurse experience preferred. Knowledge of state and Federal regulations and Joint Commission standards. Ability to work cooperatively with employees, outside agencies and the community. Willingness to pursue education in the areas of leadership, management and performance improvement concepts.
