Job Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

The Dental Hygienist promotes dental health and provides direct provision of oral hygiene and appropriate preventive services to dental patients.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepares treatment room for patient by adhering to prescribed procedures and protocols.
  • Prepares patient for dental hygiene treatment by welcoming, soothing, and seating patient.
  • Maintains instrumentation for dental hygiene treatment by sharpening, sterilizing, and selecting instruments.
  • Selects materials and equipment for dental hygiene visit by evaluating patient’s oral health.
  • Recognizes status of patient’s periodontal health and delivers the appropriate treatment based on the treatment plan.
  • Completes dental prophylaxis by cleaning deposits and stains from teeth and from beneath gum margins.
  • Detects disease by completing oral cancer screening; feeling and visually examining gums; using probes to locate periodontal disease and to assess levels of recession; exposing and developing radiographic studies.
  • Arrests dental decay by applying fluorides and other cavity preventing agents.
  • Maintains patient appearance and ability to chew by fabricating temporary restorations, cleaning and polishing removable appliances, placing, carving, and finishing amalgam restorations, removing cement from crowns and bridges.
  • Helps dentist manage dental and medical emergencies.
  • Educates patients by giving oral hygiene and plaque control instructions and postoperative instructions, providing reminders of time of next dental hygiene visit.
  • Initiates oral hygiene instruction with all patients during course of treatment.
  • Properly refers abnormal findings to appropriate provider.(i.e. undiagnosed hypertension to MD, luekoplatic oral lesion to DDS).
  • Notifies DDS of patients who fail to respond to initial therapy appropriately and thereby may need chemotherapeutic or surgical intervention.
  • Documents dental hygiene services by recording vital signs and medical and dental histories, charting in patient records.
  • Follows clinic protocol with reviewing patient’s medical history at every appointment and records changes.
  • Maintains dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies placing and expediting orders for supplies, verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Follows clinic radiographic protocol and produces diagnostic radiographs.  

Education & Experience Requirement:

Associates (A.A.) Degree from a Community College or technical school in dental hygiene, license to practice oral hygiene in the state of Colorado, 1-2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries and diseases.This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.Comprehensive knowledge of oral hygiene care.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms and other office procedures and terminology.

    Computer Skills:

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Products: Outlook, Word, Excel.Ability to sufficiently perform daily word processing tasks and work with data in spreadsheets.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands:

This position works in a dental office setting and while performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and use hands/fingers to handle or feel. Specific vision abilities include close, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.


Current immunizations are required to work at Sunrise Community Health and may vary dependent upon the position. Influenza (Flu) and Tdap Vaccines are required for ALL staff.
