Job Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

The Dental Assistant assists the Dentist during examination and treatment of patients and is responsible for preparing patients for procedures, recording medical histories, taking x-rays, and preparing dental equipment.  

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepares patient for dental treatment procedures by welcoming, comforting and seating patient.
  • Provides instrumentation by sterilizing, disinfecting and delivering instruments to the treatment area.Sets up instrument trays and positions instruments for Dentist’s access.
  • Provides materials by selecting, mixing, and placing materials on instruments and in the patient’s mouth.
  • Assists dentist during dental procedures.
  • Provides proper triage for patients.Takes and records medical and dental histories and vital signs of patient.
  • Assists Dentist in management of medical and dental emergencies.
  • Educates patients in oral hygiene and plaque control.
  • Provides postoperative instructions prescribed by Dentist.
  • Records treatment information in patient records.Documents dental care services by charting pertinent information in EHR.
  • Assists patients in scheduling appointments, follow-up care, referrals and medication refills.
  • Cleans and stocks exam rooms to maintain par levels.
  • Maintains dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Provides diagnostic information by exposing and developing dental x-rays.
  • Fabricates temporary restorations or custom impressions from preliminary impressions.
  • Assists team to maintain proper clinic flow.
  • Participates in collaborative measures.
  • Follows and initiates policy for standing orders. 

Education & Experience Requirement:

High School Diploma; Graduate of a Dental Assistant program or Associates (A.A.) Degree from a Community College or technical school, 1-2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  


Preferred Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries and diseases.This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms and other office procedures and terminology. 

    Computer Skills:

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Products: Outlook, Word, Excel.Ability to sufficiently perform daily word processing tasks and work with data in spreadsheets. 


  • Interpersonal Skills – Responds promptly to internal and external customer needs, maintains confidentiality.
  • Communication – Communicates well both verbally and in writing.
  • Dependability – Follows instructions, responds to management direction, completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands:

This position works in a dental office setting and while performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; stand, walk, and use hands/fingers to handle or feel. Specific vision abilities include close, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.


Current immunizations are required to work at Sunrise Community Health and may vary dependent upon the position. Influenza (Flu) and Tdap Vaccines are required for ALL staff.
