Public Job Description:

To further support the U.S. Coast Guard, THOR has an opening for a Journeyman Electrical Engineer.  In support of U.S Coast Guard Headquarters this position will execute and manage the following tasks required to provide engineering and technical support in studying, analyzing, and evaluating designs for U.S. Coast Guard Surface Forces Logistics Center Engineering Solutions Division (SFLC ESD):

  • Provide specific support in the area of design and review of electrical systems.

  • Provide engineering and technical support for design review, and perform feasibility studies and conceptual designs of ships and shipboard systems in support of existing and potential future vessel acquisition programs.  

  • Provide engineering and technical support efforts in defining optimal characteristics for Coast Guard vessels for powering requirements, general and system arrangement layouts, and electrical systems (low and medium voltage), interior communications, control, navigation, combat, specialized electrical, and machinery control systems.

  • Provide engineering and technical support for the evaluation of recommendations for ongoing construction projects, preparation of engineering analyses and determination of solutions for construction problems on vessels presently undergoing renovation or construction, and assist in the preparation of technical packages that may contain specifications, drawings, or both, (such as, installation instructions, bill of materials, and cost and weight estimates) for issuance of engineering changes and Time Compliance Technical Orders (TCTOs).

  • Provide engineering and technical support to assist in conducting tasks such as ensuring proper matching between propulsion equipment and the vessels' powering requirements; assisting in acceptance trials; shipboard software and hardware integration, such as Main Propulsion Control and Monitoring System (MPCMS), and interfacing with other computer systems; analyzing loads on ship service and emergency power systems, preparing protective device coordination studies, fault current analysis, voltage drop calculation, arc flash analysis, system stability and power quality analyses of shipboard electrical power systems; and reviewing contract specifications for completeness.  

 

 

Security Clearance Requirement: 

  • Must currently have an active SECRET clearance or have had a SECRET clearance that is currently in a dormant status.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Experience: 
The qualified candidate shall possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience:

  • A Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering plus three (3) to ten (10) years of relevant experience

  • A minimum of at least one (1) year demonstrated experience with shipbuilding acquisitions

  • A minimum of at least one (1) year demonstrated experience supporting a major system acquisition program (DHS/USCG Level I, DoD ACAT I or equivalent)

  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication and presentation skills;

  • Sound business ethics, including the protection of proprietary, confidential and classified information.

  • Team player with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and/or Access)

  • Anticipated travel requirement: Less than 10 percent
