Job Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

This position provides supportive, recovery-oriented interaction and monitoring of homeless individuals with substance abuse and mental illness, residing in the WCS Thurgood Marshall Apartments.

Essential Functions:

  1. Monitor resident and guest activity to ensure safety in Thurgood Marshall Apartments.
  2. Make hourly rounds to monitor the environment of the Thurgood Marshall Apartments.
  3. Act as a role model for residents and guests.
  4. Interact with residents and conduct wellness checks.
  5. Document all resident contacts and incidents in hard and electronic file.
  6. Using de-escalation techniques (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention), intervene as necessary to prevent harmful situations or behaviors from escalating.
  7. Collaborate with co-worker to provide ADL (activities of daily living) assistance to residents.
  8. Collaborate with co-worker with facilitating daily activities/groups for the residents.
  9. Record and relay resident inquiries to Program Director.
  10. Utilize Motivational Interviewing, Trauma Informed Care, Strengths-Based Recovery and Harm Reduction as primary skills/tools to enhance resident’s participation and success.
  11. Responsible for responding to general inquiries (phone and door).
  12. Responsible for greeting guests and keeping check-in and check-out log in hard and electronic file.
  13. Assist with onsite meals and related documentation.
  14. Assist with medication reminders.
  15. Responsible for general housekeeping in the common areas.
  16. Communicate (timely and accurately) all resident and facilities incidents to Program Director.
  17. Notify On-Call Supervisor of any emergencies and contact as needed.

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Participate in staffings and Team meetings

  2. Other job-related duties as may be necessary to carry out the responsibilities of the position.

 

Job Qualifications:

Minimal Qualifications and Salary Schedule:

High School diploma/equivalency required
No less than 1 year of experience working with homelessness, substance abuse/mental health. Additional education may substitute for some experience. 
Must be able to pass an Agency background check as well as the Caregiver’s background check. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to work in a diverse setting interacting with homeless individuals with substance abuse and mental illness.  Must have good communication skills, be flexible, patient, and compassionate and maintain confidential information. Must have the ability to work independently with a minimal amount of supervision but must be a strong team player as well. Ability to multi task, take initiative and apply knowledge to variety of circumstances.

Work Relationship and Scope:

Reports directly to Program Director and Interacts and maintains good working relationship with WCS staff, residents, guests and the general public.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed primarily in a residential setting with individuals residing in the Harm Reduction House; some of whom may be unstable and symptomatic at times.

Typical work week is Monday-Friday, 40 hours with some flexibility during the day and evening hours. Possible weekends and holiday coverage may be necessary.

Physical Demands:

Work activities involve “movement” within the Harm Reduction House.  It requires an ability to go up and down stairs and lift/carry 20 pounds.  Staff is responsible for general upkeep in the common areas of the building and can expect to assist residents with light housekeeping duties as needed.
